You are in the Healthcare Practice Olympics
"We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort." – Jesse Owens, (4-time Olympic gold medalist)
WATCHING SEGMENTS OF THE 2024 OLYMPICS, I can only imagine the athletes' determination, sacrifice, hopes, and goals.
Each has traveled a noble journey through effort, successes, and failures. I am inspired by these dedicated individuals who've tempered and honed their skills and focus through continued competition and, I am sure, grueling discomfort.
These athletes remind me of you, the business owner and doctor. And -- the professionals who support you and your patients.
Like these athletes, as a chiropractor or practice owner, you have begun a venture few dare. Where you go, there is no hiding or coasting. You are immediately rewarded or penalized based on your and the entire team's performance. There is no guaranteed tenure in your job or assurance that you'll have business next month. It is all up to you and each member of the team.
Like you and your business, Olympic sports and athletics are performance-based. There are the scores, the times, the results, the stats. You can’t fake it. You compete for all to see. You slip and fall, and it shows up on the scores. You practice, train, and do things right, and this also is reflected on the scoreboard.
What a challenge you, like the athletes, have taken on! And what an opportunity to demonstrate all you can give, do, and be.
At top levels, both Olympic athletes and practice owners need unwavering focus, resilience, and the ability to turn challenges into opportunities for growth.
Let's look at what Olympic athletes do to be their best and how you, practice owner, doctor, and team member, can do the same. Consider the following action steps:
1. DEVELOP A CHAMPION'S MINDSET. Continually work to:
a. Nurture within yourself resilience and determination by setting clear goals.
b. Maintain a positive outlook even when faced with obstacles.
c. Regularly practice visualization techniques to reinforce your vision of success.
2. BUILD YOUR SUPPORT TEAM.
a. Invest in building a strong, motivated practice team, developing a culture of excellence and mutual support. Help the team members achieve their goals.
b. Engage mentors, coaches, and advisors who can provide guidance and support.
c. Assign someone to be the manager to pick up and complete administrative tasks that end on up your desk or don't get done at all.
3. CONTINUOUSLY IMPROVE. Like athletes who constantly refine their techniques,
commit to ongoing learning and development for yourself and each team member. (Read more about this in my book, the Goal Driven Business (Chapter 4, page 43)
4. CELEBRATE THE WINS! Recognize any positive improvement in the practice, with
yourself, your patients, and your team. This helps maintain motivation and builds momentum towards larger goals.
These strategies work for Olympic athletes and they will work for you.
Never forget, you are a practice athlete, in competition, against many odds to achieve better and better results. Relish the wins, recover from losses, keep improving, and see just how far you and your team can go.
For the win and the game,
Ed
